The National Engineering Innovation Competition is offered to all
engineering related faculties in universities and tertiary institutions
across Australia. This program focuses on developing the creativity
of engineering
students utilising the world’s most advanced software.
No project is too big or too small, too simple or too complicated,
too unusual or too plain. It is about ideas and visions, and fulfilling
those visions through innovation. The first in this series of competitions
was conducted in 00/01 and 15 finalists were sent on a tour of some
of the most advanced technological industries in the world !

Guidelines
The
National Engineering Innovation Competition has very few mandatory
guidelines to adhere to, as we are aiming to bring out the innovative
capability of young Australians. To meet the wider goals of the
Forum there are however several essential elements to be considered
for
the successful completion of the Competition project.
Required
Elements
Bringing
together skills
The project should bring together the university's or tertiary institution's
capabilities in engineering, business & marketing to develop a product,
process or service, which is world leading in its application.
E-business
Technology
Each university and tertiary institution must implement the use of e-business
technology in some form within their project. This does not mean e-commerce
but rather web technology to bring together people, skills and capabilities
of people separated by distance.
Adopting
a Country Town
Each university and tertiary institution must adopt a country town to work
with on this project. The regional area or town that is chosen may greatly
influence the projects' direction due to that community's needs, cultural values
and geographical uniqueness.
By working with the members of the regional community using e-business
technology, the tyranny of distance felt between the university or
tertiary institution and its country counterpart will be of little
consequence.
The reverse situation would apply if the tertiary institution is
country based.
Commercial
Organisation
Each university and tertiary institution must adopt at least one commercial
organisation or company as a partner to help develop its innovation project.
A business / company can be from any industry, and will be chosen by the university
or tertiary institution and the regional community. Again, the determinants
of the business chosen are unique to each particular project.
We would like universities, tertiary institutions and industry to
form a bond, which highlights the mutual strengths that can be gained
from working together.
Judging
Criteria
The judges of the National Engineering Innovation Competition
will be eminent in their fields, and may not be members of The
Re-Engineering Australia Forum.
The judging criteria is not rigid, although all of the competition's
main guidelines must be adhered to, and the projects' innovative,
original and creative approach will be favourably considered.
Commercial
Value
It would be of a greater benefit if the project could be developed
into a product, process or service that has commercialisation potential
in some stage of its life cycle. This is a not criterion for judgement,
merely a practical view of the outcome of a long term project. The
commercial value of the project will, however, remain with the entrant.
The Forum wishes no involvement in the outcome of the project. We
wish only to inspire.
Prizes
For the exceptional work which will have taken place over the year,
the Re-Engineering Australia Forum would like to reward the efforts
of the most outstanding entry with a substantial prize.
The prize is in the form of international study tours to the value
of $80,000, which will allow our progressive young Engineers to
travel to some of the world's leading companies, to be immersed in
and experience an environment of engineering best practice. These
study tours will hopefully be enriching and motivating experiences,
showing that Australian industry is comparable to the world's best.
Other
Prizes
As the Re-Engineering Australia Forum progresses, other prizes from different
sponsors will be added to the bounty. These may include smaller consolation
prizes of study tours within Australia or overseas.
